How the roller shutter and sun protection industries can profit from the security boom

The market for security technology is flourishing: According to a study by the Federation for Security Systems the sales volume in 2005 was 2.2 billion euros – and the trend is an upward one. Related industries such as the roller shutter and sun protection sectors can profit from the trend towards greater security. Automated roller shutters and venetian blinds offer a number of security functions which can be utilized as sales arguments for drives and controls:

1. Simulating presence
Automated roller shutters and venetian blinds primarily contribute to simulating the presence of the residents: With the aid of intelligent timers these systems open and close the blind or shutter at set times. Special functions ensure that the deception is successful: The AstroTec from elero, for example, opens and closes roller shutters and venetian blinds automatically when the sun rises and sets. As these times vary from day to day, the “Astro” function conveys a credible impression of an occupied house, even if the residents are away.

2. Combining sun protection and an alarm system
The security functions of automated roller shutters and venetian blinds do not end with the deterrence of burglars. With the corresponding add-on components the automation can be combined with an alarm system. The radio receiver Revio-868 P, for example, is suited to third-party controls – and thus also for the control of an alarm system. This allows the user to assign a channel on the hand-held transmitter to the alarm system, for instance, allowing it to be activated or deactivated at the push of a button. Even more convenient: In combination with a timer the alarm system is deactivated automatically.

3. Installing security systems
Solutions for the networking of the entire building technology are increasingly in demand for commercial premises. Leading companies have therefore developed a digital interface with which drives and controls from differing manufacturers can work together in complex systems – the SMI technology (Standard Motor Interface).

The product range from elero comprises SMI-capable drives for roller shutters, venetian blinds and awnings, as well as an EIB actuator that is capable of controlling several SMI drives in parallel. All the drives with an SMI interface are designed for operation with a bus system, and are thus suited to use in security systems. Thus, for example, it is possible to transfer up-to-date information on roller shutters and sun protection (position, status, service information) from the drive to the actuator and to visualize all the response data. This visualization can be conducted with touch-panel displays, for instance – ideal for also keeping an eye on sun protection and roller shutters in a complex building technology and security system.
